With Father's Day on Sunday, June 20, Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington provides shopping tips and ideas when purchasing for pop:
Gift Cards and Certificates: Check for expiration dates and usability online.
Electronic Gadgets: Cameras, GPS', phones, watches, music players, DVDs…
Don't remove electronics or similar products from boxes before wrapping, as the original packaging may be required for a return.
Recreational Rentals: ATVs, campers, canoes, kayaks, motorcycles…
Make sure written contracts include base rental cost, daily fees, insurance, and other details such as time restrictions. Visually inspect the rental and get written proof of any existing damage before leaving the business.
Guides, Tours and Classes: Fishing, sightseeing, skydiving, golf lessons…
Get details in writing. Understand:
1. Total costs and features. What services and equipment are included? Ensure taxes, service, single supplement and other charges are clearly disclosed.
2. Restrictions and conditions. Asterisks are commonly used to indicate restrictions, such as additional charges and time requirements. Look for a "conditions" clause. Read the small print to see if it alters the original offer.
3. Cancellation and refund policies. Get these in writing. Are there any cancellation penalties? What is considered a valid cancellation reason for the buyer or the operator? Under what conditions is a full refund available?
Spend dollars for dad wisely. Check www.bbb.org for free BBB Reliability Reports. When buying expensive items or gifts, get refund, exchange, warranty and guarantee policies in writing. Ask if there is a return time limit. Get a gift receipt and enclose it with the present.
